Air Canada's predecessor, Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA) inaugurated its first flight on September 1st , 1937. The 50-minute flight aboard of a Lockheed L-10A carried two passengers and mail between Vancouver and Seattle. By 1964, TCA had grown to become Canada's national airline; it changed its name to Air Canada. The airline became fully privatized in 1989. Air Canada is the 15th largest commercial airline in the world by traffic and employs 27,000 people. Its corporate headquarters are located in Montreal.

Air Canada is the only international network carrier in North America to receive a Four-Star ranking according to independent U.K. research firm Skytrax. In 2013, Air Canada was ranked for a fourth consecutive year “Best International Airline in North America” in a worldwide survey of more than 18 million airline passengers conducted by Skytrax. According to the 2012 Canadian Business Travel Survey conducted by Ipsos Reid, Air Canada was the preferred airline for more than 79 percent of frequent business travellers in Canada. Customers seeking enhanced comfort and service on international flights will have the option of booking in Air Canada’s new Premium Economy cabin, beginning July 2013 on Montreal-Paris flights when the first of Air Canada’s five new Boeing 777 aircraft enter the fleet. Air Canada’s 37 Boeing 787 aircraft will feature a brand new, enhanced version of Air Canada’s award-winning Executive First lie-flat beds and product that has yet to be announced, in addition to Premium Economy and Economy options. The Boeing 787 fleet will be deployed on the carrier’s current and future high premium demand international routes.
Air Canada has formed an integrated leisure group combining its tour operator business, Air Canada Vacations, with its new leisure airline, Air Canada rouge (aircanadarouge.com). The leisure airline announced its first 14 routes serving popular holiday destinations in Europe, the Caribbean and Central America starting in July 2013.
